Balance and Resistance - A collective project with the great Mexican artist and beloved friend Lourdes Grobet

This is a complex visual art project that started as a vague idea in 1998, when I shared with the Mexican visual artist Lourdes Grobet the notion that it would be good to cross the Bering Strait from the West to the East, considering how bad things turned since this hypotetical immigration process took place. Many years passed and we kept on reflecting on the idea of the boundaries, the violence of the frontiers and how they were being redefined in invisible spaces. The project started with the attempt of launching of a buoy in the Time Line in July 2008, in the Bering Strait. This was the first collection of images that would nurture years of an evolving process where Lourdes Grobet always invited me to participate. My contribution consisted on the conceptualization and writing of some the documents related to this project. I also made a brooch to represent our vision of the Bering Strait as an ambiguous, yet impossible frontier to cross.
Lourdes passed away in 2022, shortly after publishing her work on the Teatro Campesino. Tireless until the end, she gave us some homework: "La Transparencia de un Tren" an installation in progress, under the leadership of her sons Javier and Juan Cristóbal and her daughters, Ximena and Alejandra.
